5 Mistakes to Avoid When Buying an E-Bike

There’s nothing more disappointing than buying something that doesn’t meet your expectations, and ebikes are no different. Ebikes are an expensive investment, so it's important to do your research. However, you shouldn’t base your purchase solely on ebike model or price. We want to help you avoid these five common mistakes people make when purchasing an ebike and provide some strategies for finding the best one for you.

1. Not Test Riding First

You should always test-ride your ebike before spending any money. Ebikes have a different feel from traditional bikes because of the increased weight, handling, and speed. The frames and seats are larger and heavier as well.

Taking an ebike for a test ride will help you determine if the model is comfortable for you and your riding style. Some retailers do not accept returns, so you're out of luck if you end up not liking an ebike you didn't test ride.

If you haven’t ridden an ebike before, you’ll also need to consider the type of motor. Most ebikes have either a rear hub or mid-drive motor, and both operate very differently. You can read more about ebike motors and how to determine the best one for you here

2. Buying Based on Price

With ebikes, you get what you pay for. Ebikes are more expensive than traditional bikes because of the motor, battery, parts, and labor associated with manufacturing. Bikes on the lower end of the price range are built with cheap and low-quality batteries and motors, meaning your ebike will wear out more quickly.

Purchasing a quality ebike is well worth the investment. When you buy an ebike from a reputable brand, you know it's made with quality assurance. While quality makes up a large portion of the price, the type of ebike model also has a role.

3. Not Considering Your Riding Style

What type of rides will you take your ebike on? Road ebikes are very different than ebikes made for aggressive mountain biking. You’ll want to select a model conducive to your riding purpose. Purchasing an ebike that isn't suited for your riding intention could mean more frequent repairs or part replacements. In addition to product descriptions, customer reviews will help you get a full picture of what you're buying.

4. Forgetting to Read Reviews

Along with price and test riding, you should read customer reviews. Users will highlight the good and bad of the model and their riding experience with it. These reviews are essential for selecting a model that fits your riding style and preferences. Plus, customers will give you a (mostly) unbiased look at what the ebike can offer you.

If you’re planning to purchase an ebike from a local retailer, be sure to read their shop reviews as well. Is this store trustworthy? Do they help you through the buying process, or are they pushing for a sale? Ebikes are expensive, and you’ll want to purchase from a reputable shop that genuinely cares about your experience.

5. Disregarding Accessories

Don’t forget about all the extra things needed for the best ride! If you don’t already have one, you’ll need to purchase a protective helmet. If you transport your ebike often, you should also purchase a new bike rack for your car. Traditional bike racks do not account for the extra weight or space an ebike requires.

We also recommend purchasing a container or bag for your ebike. Baskets and bags are lightweight and will not hinder your riding experience. You never know when you'll need to carry or transport something!

When you’re in the market searching for an ebike, keep these factors in mind. Ebikes are an investment, so doing your research will help you find the one that best fits your needs and budget.
